A new state of the art sports and recreation centre has opened in Alexandria, marking the completion of 7 major sports facilities across the Green Square and city south area in the past 7 years.

The City of Sydney has invested more than $230 million creating the unique sports and recreation precinct, with all 7 world-class venues located within 2km of Green Square station.

A former industrial warehouse, the new Huntley Street Recreation Centre is a modern community sports hub designed to meet the needs of residents, workers, schools and sporting groups for decades to come.

As one of Australia's fastest-growing urban renewal areas – currently home to 48,000 residents – the Green Square and city south community will ultimately be up to 3 times larger than many other village centres in the City of Sydney’s area, with a projected 65,000 residents by 2046.

Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO said the opening reflects more than 20 years of planning to ensure public infrastructure was established for Green Square's growing population.

"With the opening of this new facility, we’ve created an extraordinary sports precinct in Australia's fastest-growing urban community,” the Lord Mayor said.

"Before Green Square's renewal, this area had very few public sports facilities. We recognised decades ago that as thousands of people moved into the area, they would need access to high-quality places to play sport, exercise and connect with others.

"We've spent more than 20 years planning for this growth, securing land and building facilities at the same time as the population moves in to ensure communities have the infrastructure they need from day one.

"These facilities are not just for Green Square residents. They support surrounding neighbourhoods, local schools, workers and visitors, providing opportunities for everyone to stay active and healthy.

"Importantly, this investment has been made possible through developer contributions generated by Green Square's urban renewal, ensuring growth helps fund the public infrastructure needed to support a growing community."

The new Huntley Street recreation centre features:

  • 4 indoor multipurpose courts for basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball, badminton, pickleball and table tennis
  • 3 multipurpose rooms available for hire for sports and recreation, meetings and events
  • spectator seating, reception and shared space areas
  • modern change room facilities
  • outdoor practice courts
  • dedicated fitness space
  • landscaped public areas and bicycle parking.

Designed with sustainability at its core, the centre's rooftop is covered with solar panels to help generate its own power. The building also incorporates natural light and ventilation, while rainwater is collected, stored and reused onsite.

The fully accessible venue has been designed to ensure everyone can enjoy the new community facility.

The Huntley Street Recreation Centre joins 6 other major facilities across the Green Square precinct:

  • Perry Park Recreation Centre – a major indoor venue featuring 4 multipurpose courts for competitions and community use
  • Perry Park Sportsfield – a FIFA-sized all-weather pitch with amenities pavilion, change rooms and upgraded lighting
  • Getiela Sportsfield – an all-weather multipurpose field supporting football, rugby league, AFL and other sports (in partnership with the Department of Education)
  • Green Square Public School and Community Spaces outdoor court – a covered court for basketball, volleyball and netball for community use (in partnership with the Department of Education)
  • Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre – a leading facility featuring 4 pools, a gym, fitness studios, hydrotherapy pool and recreation spaces
  • Gunyama Park Sportsfield – a FIFA-standard, floodlit all-weather pitch for community and competition sport.

Together, the 7 facilities provide a comprehensive network of indoor and outdoor sports opportunities, supporting everyone from casual participants and families through to clubs, schools and competitive athletes.

As Green Square continues to evolve into one of Australia's most densely populated urban communities, the City of Sydney's investment in sports and recreation infrastructure will continue to support the health, wellbeing and quality of life of residents, workers and visitors across the broader district.

The City of Sydney’s plans for the proposed Mandible Street sports precinct is set to further expand opportunities to play and meet the needs of the area's growing population. Construction and opening of the $78 million facility are expected within 5 years.

As well as this, the City of Sydney has prepared a draft open space and recreation strategy which sets out a 20-year vision, responding to population growth, increasing density and changing community needs. The strategy will be open for public comment in early 2027 before being finalised.
