A CUP OF DEFIANCE: AUSSIES UNWILLING TO GIVE UP COFFEE

MyFitnessPal

Sydney, Australia, 1 October 2025 –  Today, on International Coffee Day, Australians will be celebrating their deep-rooted love for coffee. From the early morning flat white, to a pick me up espresso or the weekend caffeinated indulgence like an iced mocha, coffee remains a beloved ritual across the country.

According to new data from global nutrition and food tracking app, MyFitnessPal, Australia’s love affair with coffee shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, 2 in 5 (40%) Australians surveyed in a recent poll by MyFitnessPal claimed they would not give up coffee, regardless of any potential health impact. Chocolate came in at a close second, with 39% of Australians also claiming to never give up their other favourite indulgence.

Nutritionist and MyFitnessPal ambassador, Michaela Sparrow, says, “From bean to cup, Aussies love a caffeinated brew. It's not just the taste of caffeine we enjoy on International Coffee Day, it's all the daily rituals around it, like gathering around a cuppa at home, or in the office with colleagues  - there’s many reasons why coffee tops the list for many of us on small habits we aren’t willing to give up.”

“What many Aussies might not realise, however, is the inadvertently large amount of hidden sugars and fats we might consume from our daily cup of brew. To make sure your favourite morning or afternoon pick me up is working in your favour, consider skipping flavoured creams, syrups and even sweetened plant-based milks which can often contain lots more sugar than most realise.”

“That’s where tools like MyFitnessPal can really help. By tracking what goes into your coffee, just like you would with your food, you get a clear picture of the nutrients and macros included and can make smarter choices. It might be as simple as swapping out your daily cappuccino or flavoured latte for a long black with a dash of milk or choosing unsweetened milk alternatives,” added Michaela.

“Drinking coffee on a full stomach is also something I always encourage. It supports better digestion, helps maintain energy levels and can reduce the likelihood of jitters or crashes later on. At the end of the day,  it should be about better understanding what’s in your favorite foods or drinks, so you can enjoy it in a way that supports your overall nutrition and health goals, ” concluded Michaela.
