ACOSS welcomes domestic gas reserve and urges immediate action to help people with the least

ACOSS

ACOSS welcomes the federal government's proposal for a domestic gas reservation to deliver cheaper local gas supply while we transition to renewable energy.

“There is no gas shortage in Australia. The problem is the system which allows rich multinational gas companies to make huge profits by exporting 80% of our gas,” ACOSS Program Director of Climate and Energy Kellie Caught said.

“Gas exports are driving domestic gas and electricity prices through the roof, with prices tripling and driving up inflation and household bills.

“Multinational corporations are posting huge profits while people on low incomes are having to skip meals and delay critical medical appointments because they can’t afford their energy bills.

“For several years, ACOSS has been calling on the federal government to establish a domestic gas reserve to deliver cheaper local supply and we welcome today's decision.

“But we warn against future initiatives to incentivise more gas production or subsidise rich multinational companies through the government bulk buying gas for manufacturers.

“Given the domestic gas reserve won’t start until 2027, we are also urging the government to do more to immediately help people struggling the most with energy bills.”

ACOSS is calling for:

  • Targeted support to help First Nations, renters and low-income home owners electrify their homes to get off costly, polluting and unhealthy gas;

  • Remove renewable subsidies from energy bills and fund the costs directly in the federal budget;

  • Provide energy debt relief; and

  • Raise the rate of Jobseeker.

“ACOSS is also calling on the federal government to introduce a gas export levy of 25% to ensure multinational gas producers contribute their fair share of profit from public resources,” Ms Caught said.

“People in Australia are being ripped off while gas giants profit, it’s time for the government to prioritise people and communities over gas companies.”
