Key Facts:
  • Australian businesses must adopt AI now or risk becoming obsolete, with AI already adding an estimated US$21 billion annually to Australia's economy through productivity improvements
  • AI Digital Agents offer 24/7 work capability without superannuation, holiday pay or payroll tax costs, with proven success in sectors like call centres where NIB saved $22 million
  • Australian AI adoption is growing rapidly, with over 50% of businesses using AI and R&D spending increasing 142% from A$276 million in 2021-22 to A$668.3 million in 2023-24
  • Companies must implement AI solutions immediately and retrain staff to work alongside AI, particularly in repetitive, high-volume roles
  • 88% of global organisations now use AI in at least one business function, up from 78% the previous year, according to McKinsey & Company

Far from being a threat, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is fast becoming the lifeline Australian businesses need in a high-cost, high-pressure economy. As technology redefines the modern workforce, leaders are being urged to act now or risk being left behind.

The age of digital labour is no longer coming, it’s here, and it’s already bigger than the population it was built to serve where businesses must evolve or expire.

No superannuation, holiday pay or payroll tax and 100% loyalty with the ability to work 24/7 are what these "Digital Agents" are ready to do which will reshape industries across the board, from customer service and healthcare to law, education, and finance.

And the message from the frontlines of AI innovation couldn’t be clearer, “Australian businesses must fall in line or fall behind,” says Mr. Kosala Aravinda, Chief Operations Officer for Blockstars Technology. We need to move past fear and start looking at AI as a way to protect businesses, reduce burnout, and create sustainable jobs of the future.”

While policymakers wrestle with economic headwinds and labour laws like the new ‘Right to Disconnect’, and the never-ending ‘work from home’ debate, businesses now face a clear choice. Automate and elevate or continue to struggle and risk extinction.

AI agents work 24/7, never take sick leave, and scale at a fraction of the cost. The productivity gains aren’t theoretical they’re proven and they’re happening right now.

Take the call centre sector, for example. AI voice agents are now replacing human reps across major companies. Australian health insurer NIB slashed costs by $22 million by replacing routine interactions with AI. Verizon, Amazon, and even banks are rapidly deploying digital agents that outperform their human counterparts, cheaper, faster, smarter.

According to McKinsey & Company, globally, organisations report that 88% of them are using AI in at least one business function (up from 78% a year ago). Amazon reports that in Australia alone, more than 50% of businesses (1.3 million organisations) now regularly use AI, with a year-on-year growth rate of 16% in adoption. In terms of business R&D, spending on AI in Australia soared from about A$276 million in 2021-22 to A$668.3 million in 2023-24, a growth of 142% according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

And productivity? A recent report by Next DC estimates that AI is already adding an estimated US$21 billion a year to Australia’s economy through productivity improvements, with potential to grow seven-fold by 2030.

For those needing a little more convincing the numbers don’t lie. AI made up 20% of the world’s total R&D spending in 2024, according to the ABC. ASIC’s chairman has confirmed AI is now a top boardroom priority for Australian companies. Yet most Australian businesses are still stuck in “wait-and-see” mode.

“If companies don’t implement AI now and start retraining their staff, they will not survive,” said Mr. Aravinda. “AI isn’t a job killer it’s in fact a business saver,” he continued.

So, what do businesses need to do now? Kosala explains that “Businesses must look at Implementing AI solutions immediately, especially in repetitive, high-volume roles like call centres. Businesses also need to retrain and re-skill their workforce to work with AI, not against it. Finally, decision makers need to understand how to leverage AI to innovate, not stagnate, or risk being steamrolled by faster, smarter competitors.

In 2025, the line is drawn. Those who adopt AI will lead the next economic boom. Those who don’t? Won’t be around to regret it.
