AUSSIES IN A PICKLE: AUSTRALIA EMBRACES VIRAL FOOD TREND AS PICKLES SURGE IN POPULARITY

MyFitnessPal

Sydney, Australia, 18 September 2026 – Love them or loathe them, pickles are having a moment. Fresh data from the world’s number one nutrition and food tracking app, MyFitnessPal, reveals a 16% year-on-year increase in pickle logs among Australian users.

The rise comes amid the continuing popularity of #picklecore and #picklemaxxing, which have helped turn the humble pickle into an unlikely cultural phenomenon.

According to data from active MyFitnessPal users in Australia, average monthly pickle logs have also increased by more than 5% month on month suggesting the online fascination may be spilling over into the country’s real-world food behaviours.

While Australians are getting themselves into a pickle, some states are embracing the trend more than others. New South Wales residents log the most pickles in the country, followed by Victoria, with Queensland rounding out the top three.

The trend also cuts across generations. Australians aged 25–34 and 35–44 currently account for the largest share of pickle logs, while Gen Z users logging pickles is also growing.

Nutritionist and MyFitnessPal ambassador, Michaela Sparrow, said, “Pickles are a great example of just how quickly a food can find itself at the centre of culture and suddenly be everywhere. There have always been foods people tend to have strong opinions about, which makes the growing popularity of pickles particularly interesting.”

“Beyond their distinctive taste, certain fermented pickles can also contain beneficial bacteria that can support gut health, giving the humble pickle something more to offer than flavour alone. As with any food, it’s less about looking at one item in isolation and more about understanding how it fits within your overall eating habits and nutritional needs.”

“MyFitnessPal guides Aussies toward smarter choices about what they’re already eating. It doesn’t matter if a food just went viral or has always been a fridge staple, MyFitnessPal can help you understand what it means for your specific goals and what to do next,” added Michaela.
