Australian businesses now utilising fractional leaders for productivity and financial gains
New research shows an employment market, led by specialist talent, accelerating the economy
Sydney, Australia, 19 October 2026 – Australia’s fractional leadership market has reached 1,015 leaders within a year of The Fractional Directory beginning to map it, according to the company’s APAC Fractional Leadership Report 2026. Australia’s fractional leaders are concentrated in specialist roles such as CMOs, CFOs, general counsel and CISOs, and the group is emerging as a key cost saving and productivity driver for the start-up and SME segments.
For the report, a fractional leader is defined as a founder or senior executive who joins a company's leadership team part-time. They stay for three months or more and have direct accountability for outcomes, and unlike a contractor, they’ve operated at the highest levels of the C-suite.

The report also found:
- Two days a week of a senior fractional leader costs a business about $110,400 a year, less than half the median full-time CFO salary for an SME in Sydney.
- Leaders working three days a week earn about $165,600, close to a full-time executive salary, spread across several companies instead of depending on one.
- Sydney is home to 49% of Australia’s fractional leaders, with the remaining 51% in Perth and other parts of the country.
The report also found most fractional leaders work with several companies at once, often mixing board roles, embedded leadership, consulting, advisory and coaching. For companies, that growing pool offers the same calibre of talent they'd hire full-time, sized to what they need and at a lower total cost.
“Within a year of mapping Australia, we’ve found more than 1,000 fractional leaders,” said Michelle Allbon, CEO and Co-Founder of The Fractional Directory.
“Flexible leadership has become a high value option for Australian businesses, and the market is ready for even more businesses to engage. Many of Australia’s fractional leaders have built deep expertise in a particular field, and they bring practical skills that many businesses can’t afford to hire full-time. That experience lifts business growth and productivity and, if leveraged correctly, the same for the Australian economy.”
A market of specialists
Australia’s fractional leaders are concentrated in specialist roles such as CMOs, CFOs, general counsel and CISOs, and companies tend to bring in a fractional leader for a single function. By industry experience, legal, operations and people leaders are the most likely to have worked across several industries.
“Australian businesses look for people who know their field when they face a specific challenge, whether that’s marketing, finance or security,” said Allbon. “Fractional leadership lets them bring in that expertise for as much time as they need.”
With more than one in ten of Australia’s fractional leaders listed as CFOs, companies are now trusting fractional leaders with the company’s crown jewels, the finances.
"For start-ups and SMEs, that means experienced leadership that once required a full-time executive hire is now available a few days a week, depending on their challenge or stage of growth. For fractional leaders, a growing market offers more opportunities to work with several businesses at the same time, leveraging the careers they've built," said Allbon.
AI and tech leadership goes fractional
AI is proving to be a driver of fractional leadership roles, as AI supercharges work, experts in understanding and implementation are stepping forward in the fractional space.
The Fractional Chief AI Officer (CAIO) was introduced as an emerging role in last year’s report. Of the leaders who hold the CAIO title in Australia, half help companies identify where AI can give them a competitive advantage, and around four in ten also develop an AI strategy and roadmap.
AI is also spreading beyond the CAIO title. In Australia, nearly four in ten CAIOs list it as their second role, often CTOs, COOs or product leaders who have added AI to what they offer. Across all roles, helping companies find AI opportunities now ranks fifth among the hundreds of outcomes fractional leaders offer. Building and executing AI strategy is still a specialist job, while spotting AI opportunity is becoming a general leadership skill.
"For most companies, a full-time Chief AI Officer is hard to justify, as the role is expensive, hard to hire and its scope keeps changing. Fractional leadership gives a company C-level AI and tech leadership with accountability," said Allbon.
Finding the right leader
Fractional leaders often offer outcomes linked to change, from guiding a founding team through growing pains, pivots, restructures and deals. Companies looking for a fractional leader can start with the problem they need solved and find a leader who offers that outcome.
In Australia, one in five leaders offers two roles, reflecting a market where companies often bring in a fractional leader for one area of expertise.
“Every Australian business needs experienced leadership to grow,” said Allbon. “What matters is having the right people in the right jobs for the right amount of time. With more than 1,000 fractional leaders, there’s now an option for almost every seat. We’re building the standards that let businesses compare leaders by capability and choose them with confidence, and we see that as one of the quickest ways to lift productivity across Australian businesses.”

Methodology
Figures come from The Fractional Directory's proprietary dataset of leaders who describe themselves as fractional in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore and meet the Fractional Leadership Alliance definition. Headcounts include all 3,345 leaders, while figures on outcomes, company stages and technology use the 1,872 with full profiles. Australian mapping began in late 2025 in Sydney and Perth, with leaders elsewhere recorded as remote.
Headcounts, roles and outcomes are as at 23 September 2026 and are compared with the April 2025 report. Growth by role and day rates use March and April 2026 data. The role index compares a role's share of a market's leaders with its share across all three markets, where 100 is the regional average. Leaders can hold up to two roles. Day rates are self-reported, exclude outliers and are annualised over 46 working weeks.
