AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT URGED TO CONFRONT CHINA AT UN OVER TIBET ENVIRONMENTAL AND HUMAN RIGHTS CRISIS

CANBERRA, ACT — Human rights advocates have launched an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong, demanding Australia use its presence at the United Nations this month to hold the Chinese Government accountable for an escalating humanitarian and environmental crisis in Tibet.

“Devastating landslides and flooding along the Tibet-Nepal border have exposed a critical information vacuum caused by China’s strict lockdown of the Tibetan Plateau,” says Dr Zoȅ Bedford, Executive Officer at the Australia Tibet Council.

The Australia Tibet Council warns that Beijing’s decades-long pursuit of large-scale mining, mega-dams, and water diversion infrastructure, without the consent of local communities, is causing severe environmental damage both locally and downstream in neighbouring countries.

"Many may mistakenly believe Tibetans to be 'voiceless'," said Dr Bedford.

"But the reality is they are being deliberately and systemically silenced by China under occupation while their homeland faces ecological destruction."

• Transnational Repression: UN experts warn China's domestic laws pose active security and intimidation risks to Tibetan-Australians speaking out publicly within Australia.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has previously called for the immediate repeal of China’s ethnic unity laws, warning of severe threats to fundamental freedoms including language, religion, culture, and assembly.

“Australia has a critical opportunity at the UN General Assembly to demonstrate that human rights, environmental protection, and regional security cannot be separated from our core foreign policy,” said Dr Bedford.

Core Demands for Australian Government Action at the UN:

1. Support UN Leadership: Publicly endorse the UN High Commissioner’s call to repeal China’s Ethnic Unity Law.
2. Deploy Sanctions: Impose targeted Magnitsky-style sanctions on individuals responsible for forced assimilation policies and human rights abuses in Tibet.
3. Domestic Protection: Implement concrete federal mechanisms to protect Tibetan-Australians from foreign interference and transnational intimidation.
4. Demand Infrastructure Transparency: Force accountability from Beijing regarding major Tibetan Plateau infrastructure projects and downstream environmental impacts.
5. Enforce International Access: Call for immediate, unhindered access to Tibet for international journalists, scientists, and independent monitoring bodies.
