Ban slogans that incite violence, stop Intifada forum

NSW Legislative Council candidate Lyle Shelton says that, if elected, he will introduce legislation to ban slogans that incite physical violence or harm against people — including phrases such as “globalise the intifada” and “from the river to the sea”.

Mr Shelton said Family First supports freedom of speech, but draws a clear line at speech that incites physical violence.

“Free speech must be protected, but not when it crosses into language that encourages violence the killing of an entire people group,” Mr Shelton said.

“Slogans like ‘globalise the intifada’ are widely associated with violent Islamic uprisings and have no place in a peaceful society.”

Mr Shelton also called on the NSW Government to urgently intervene to stop a forum scheduled for Tuesday, May 5 in Darlington, being held in a City of Sydney building to promote the phrase.

“It is unacceptable for a taxpayer-funded venue to host an event that seeks to justify violent slogans,” he said.

Mr Shelton praised the work of Allies for a Strong Australia, an initiative of Never Again is Now.

He encouraged people to attend tomorrow’s protest against terror promotion at the

Darlington Activity Centre, 132 Shepherd St, Darlington (near Redfern train station) at 5pm.
