'Be prepared': GPs urge patients to manage hay fever and asthma ahead of spring
Royal Australian College of GPs
As spring begins, the Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) is urging people who experience hay fever, allergies and asthma to be prepared and take steps early to manage their symptoms.
RACGP President Dr Michael Wright said people concerned about allergic rhinitis and asthma should consult their GPs.
“We might still be talking about flu cases, but with spring arriving and temperatures rising, the hay fever season is very close. It's difficult to predict exactly how severe the 2026 hay fever season will be, but people with allergic rhinitis shouldn't wait until their symptoms become troublesome to seek advice and treatment,” he said.
“Hay fever can cause symptoms including sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy or watery eyes and an itchy throat, and for some people these symptoms can have a significant impact on their day-to-day life.
“This is particularly important for people who have both allergic rhinitis and asthma, as poorly controlled hay fever can contribute to worsening asthma symptoms and increase the risk of an asthma flare-up.
“GPs can assist with an appropriate management plan ahead of the spring and summer months, including preventive treatments where appropriate, rather than waiting for symptoms to escalate.”
The College encourages people with asthma to ensure their asthma management plan is up to date and to discuss any concerns with their GP.
“People at risk of thunderstorm asthma should also be particularly vigilant as we move into spring and summer,” said Dr Wright.
“Taking steps early to manage allergies and ensuring asthma is well controlled can help people stay well through spring and summer. Your regular GP is there to help you develop a management plan that is right for you.
“The key message is to be prepared.”
