Beyond Blue Charity Day marks 10 years in Brunswick Heads as Moonshiners Women's Team Makes Historic Return

Brunswick Heads rugby team the Mullumbimby Moonshiners will gather at Alby Lofts Oval this weekend for their annual Beyond Blue Charity Day, with the club’s senior women’s team reforming after a 30-year playing hiatus to run onto the field.   

Karly Jenkins, manager of the Moonshiners and also park manager of Reflections Ferry Reserve in Brunswick Heads, which sponsors the Moonshiners, said the Charity Day on Saturday, July 11, was the 10th event the club had held to mark a cause close to the hearts of its members.

“One of our Moonshiner players lost their life to mental health and our small community has really shown up for this Day, which continues to get bigger and better,” Ms Jenkins said.

“Over the years, we’ve all been touched by those impacted by mental health so it’s important to make sure this event is a success, and to be there for our mates.”

Karly’s husband, Keelan, has played with the Moonshiners from the age of 15 and is one of their coaches, while Karly volunteers her time as club manager and is helping to organise the Charity Day event.

The Beyond Blue Charity Day will have three games – the Under 18 Men's team will play at 12 noon, the Senior Women’s team will run on at 1:45pm and the Senior Men’s team will play at 3.15pm.

Each team has a special Beyond Blue jersey that they wear for the game and when it finishes, the jerseys are auctioned. Local businesses including Reflections have donated vouchers for a giant raffle.

Last year the Charity Day raised $11,000 and there are hopes this figure can be beaten.

“We are hoping to go above that, which is huge, but we know we can as each year it does get bigger and bigger,” Ms Jenkins said.

Reflections CEO Nick Baker said the support Reflections holiday parks provided to important local causes was important in their communities, with the Beyond Blue Charity Day being just one example.

“We’re grateful to have such passionate team members who show up for their communities in all sorts of ways, and volunteer to help these events like these off the ground, raising money for important causes and being the glue that connects community,” Mr Baker said.
