Boost to early learning wages shifts the dial for educators and families but more work is needed

Uniting NSW.ACT welcomes today’s federal government announcement that it will extend the 15% wage subsidy for early learning educators while limiting fee increases and linking support to safety standards.
As a not-for-profit provider, Uniting offers safe, inclusive, high-quality early learning services at more than 40 preschools and long day care centres across NSW and the ACT.
Head of Uniting Early Learning, Nadia Petrovski, said the government’s decision was a positive step, recognising the important role educators play while also supporting affordability for families.
“A strong, fairly paid workforce is foundational to quality early learning and our educators are the heart and soul of our sector. This $3.6 billion commitment is an acknowledgement of the valuable role they play in childhood development and helping to give all children the best start.
"Families who access early learning services know the impact a skilled and caring educator can have – helping children to thrive in so many ways.
“The extension of the wage subsidy will allow providers such as Uniting to continue offering our staff a fair income without asking parents and carers to contribute more.”
“At a time when the cost-of-living is an everyday challenge for many people, the extra income means more educators can continue to provide the excellent care, quality and safety that is so important for children and their families.
“Ensuring early education is a sustainable career path helps create a sustainable workforce. It’s a crucial step on the path towards an early learning system that is accessible and available for everyone.
“Looking ahead, it’s important the government doesn’t lose focus as they work towards their goal of a universal early education and care system.
“In particular, we need to address the fact many children still miss out on early learning due to non-financial barriers such as language, disability, transport and family violence.
“We look forward to continuing to work with the government to build a system that is equipped to include every child, especially those who stand to benefit most but are also most likely to miss out.”
