Boost to social homes to help thousands
CHIA Vic
The state’s peak body for community housing said the Victorian Government's commitment to build 7,000 new social housing properties is a welcome boost that is urgently needed.
The Victorian Government will add $860 million to the Social Housing Growth Fund in next month’s budget. The 7,000 additional homes will be built over the next decade.
Community Housing Industry Association Victoria (CHIA Vic) CEO Sarah Toohey has welcomed this funding boost.
“In a tough budget environment we are thrilled that the Victorian Government has chosen to tackle the single biggest cost-of-living issue for Victorians by investing in new community housing,” Ms Toohey said.
“This will mean thousands of Victorians, currently struggling with high rents and homelessness will be able to find a safe and secure home.
“It is fantastic to see the Victorian Government investing long term to build up a pipeline of new community housing.
"The state faces a significant social housing shortfall of around 146,000 homes, so substantial construction and sustained investment are still required.
“Not-for-profit community housing organisations are proven partners in delivering safe, high-quality, affordable homes. With continued Victorian Government investment, we will have the certainty to keep building and delivering for communities that need it most.”
