The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) is calling on schools, kindergartens, daycares, community clubs, parents, teachers, carers and anyone working with children to get involved in Save the Koala Month (STKM) this September — with an initiative designed especially for kids (grown-ups are welcome too!): 30 Days and 30 Ways to Help Our Favourite Fluffy Friends!

Save the Koala Month is AKF’s biggest annual awareness campaign — a time to shine a spotlight on one of our most iconic and loved native animals, the Australian Koala, and the urgent need to protect its habitat.

This year, we’re making it fun, hands-on and educational for children across the country (and the world!) with a 30-day challenge filled with engaging activities — from cake stalls and dress-up days to bushwalks, trivia nights, craft projects and creative classroom fun.

Whether you're a teacher, parent, community leader or carer — this is your opportunity to inspire the next generation of Koala heroes. Every action, no matter how small, helps raise awareness and contributes to meaningful change.

 

Highlights from the 30-Day Challenge include:

Week 1: Awareness & Education – Learn fascinating Koala facts, write to your local MP, hold an art competition, or run a jellybean guessing contest to raise funds.

Week 2: Helping Koala Homes – Plant native trees, go on a bushwalk, count animals around your school, or set up a donation box in your community.

Week 3: Keep Koalas Safe – Host a Koala PJ party, create a Koala-themed quiz night, and teach others why it’s important to keep pets leashed near bushland.

Week 4: Koala Heroes in Action – Make crafts using recycled materials, dress up like a Koala, sing your heart out at Koala Karaoke, and pledge to keep helping wildlife.

Final Days: Reflect on your impact and celebrate with a Koala Party!

 

How to Get Involved and Make a Difference

Every dollar raised during Save the Koala Month goes directly towards protecting wild Koalas and their precious habitat through the AKF’s conservation efforts. You can fundraise as an individual, family, class, or group.

 

Here are a few easy ways to help:

• Collect gold coin donations at school or club events
• Host a cake sale, trivia night or karaoke party
• Set up a donation box at your school, sports club, or favourite local café (we will send them to you free of charge) Order here

• Adopt a Koala through the AKF with your class or club
