CDU awards Timor-Leste President with Honorary Doctorate

Charles Darwin University (CDU) has awarded the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Laureate, José Ramos-Horta, a Doctor of Letters (honoris causa).  

The Honorary Doctorate recognises his work in the Indo-Pacific region to strengthen international relationships, advance regional stability, and bridge the gap between local knowledge and global responsibility.

The President of Timor-Leste will join more than 730 CDU graduands as they walk across the stage to receive their awards this week.

“I have the honour to acknowledge the decision of Charles Darwin University to confer upon me an Honorary Doctorate, and I accept this distinction with deep humility and sincere gratitude,” he said.

“This recognition is a tribute not only to my personal journey, but also to the resilience and aspirations of the people of Timor-Leste in their enduring pursuit of peace, reconciliation, and development.”

For more than four decades, he has advanced the cause of Timor-Leste through scholarship, diplomacy, and sustained global engagement. He was a co-recipient of the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize for his work “towards a just and peaceful solution to the conflict in East Timor”.

During the long struggle for independence, he acted as a political representative, bringing international attention to the voices and experiences of the Timorese people.

CDU Interim Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Fiona Coulson acknowledged the President’s role in modern diplomacy and advocacy.  

“Throughout his leadership roles as President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and international statesman, José Ramos-Horta has consistently championed the role of universities, scholars, and future leaders in strengthening democratic institutions, advancing regional cooperation, and addressing complex global challenges," Professor Coulson said.

“CDU is proud to recognise an individual who has shown a lifelong commitment to peace, democracy, and the independence and development of Timor-Leste.  

“Given CDU’s deep and enduring connection with Timor-Leste, and our commitment to fostering opportunity across Northern Australia, this is a fitting acknowledgement for an internationally respected leader.”
