CFMEU Demerger Creates Timber, Furnishing and Textiles Union (TFTU)

Timber, Furnishing and Textiles Union (TFTU)

The Timber, Furnishing and Textiles Union (TFTU) has today been officially registered following final orders of the Federal Court of Australia, completing the demerger process overwhelmingly backed by members.

The TFTU has emerged from the former CFMEU Manufacturing Division after members voted to establish an independent union focused on their industries following dysfunction within the broader CFMEU.

The new union represents workers in timber, pulp and paper, wood products, furnishing, cabinetry, joinery, floorcovering, glass and glazing, textile, clothing, footwear and associated manufacturing industries.

TFTU National Secretary Mr Michael O’Connor said today marked the beginning of a new chapter.

“Today the Timber, Furnishing and Textiles Union officially begins as Australia’s newest union.'

“Our members voted decisively for change because they wanted a stronger union focused entirely on their industries, their jobs and their future.

“This is the foundation for building a modern, democratic and member-led union that delivers.

Mr O’Connor thanked members, delegates and the broader trade union movement, led by the Australian Council of Trade Unions, for their support, which was integral to this outcome.

“We thank every member who backed this change and everyone who stood with us.”

He said the union’s immediate priorities were growing membership, strengthening workplace organisation and delivering better wages, safer workplaces and stronger industries.
