Cheers to That: Brewers Welcome Introduction of Draught Beer Excise Freeze Legislation

Australia’s brewers and hospitality venues have today welcomed the introduction of legislation into Federal Parliament to freeze the biannual indexation of the draught beer excise for two years, sending an important signal from the Government of support for pubs and clubs in particular.

The legislation, which enacts the Albanese Government’s election commitment, will pause automatic CPI-linked increases to the draught beer excise from August 2025 to August 2027. This measure is expected to ease cost pressures on pubs and clubs, and help keep a pint more affordable for Australians.

“This is a common-sense move that recognises the vital role our breweries and pubs play in communities across the country,” said Brewers Association of Australia Chief Executive, Amanda Watson.

“After decades of relentless tax increases—84 in the past 40 years—this freeze is a welcome reprieve for an industry that supports over 100,000 jobs and contributes upwards of $17 billion to the national economy. It also acknowledges that Australian beer taxes, which are the third highest in the world, are simply too high.”

The legislation also includes an increase in the excise remission cap for brewers and distillers from $350,000 to $400,000 starting July 2025.

“This is a positive step forward. We commend the Prime Minister, Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer for listening to the concerns of our sector and backing in the role liquid markets play in our economy, with prompt delivery of legislation to support us,” said Ms Watson.

“We look forward to continuing to work with policymakers on broader reforms to ensure a fair and sustainable alcohol taxation system that supports farmers, local jobs, and communities in every electorate across the country.”

The Brewers Association of Australia remains committed to working collaboratively with government to support community wellbeing, responsible service, and strong economic contribution.
