CIMIC Group company CPB Contractors has been selected by Major Road Projects Victoria, as part of the Synergy consortium, to deliver the Eastern Freeway Upgrades project between Tram and Springvale roads.

Designed to reduce motorist travel times and improve connections in Melbourne’s north east, the Eastern Freeway Upgrades between Tram and Springvale roads will be delivered by CPB Contractors in partnership with BMD Constructions and Arup.

CIMIC Group Executive Chairman Juan Santamaría said: “These upgrades will be critical to providing greater access across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, connecting into North East Link and the M80 Ring Road in Greensborough, reducing travel times for motorists by up to 11 minutes between Springvale Road and Hoddle Street, and upgrading pedestrian and cycling connections.”

CPB Contractors Managing Director Jason Spears said: “CPB Contractors looks forward to leveraging the experience and expertise of our people on the North East Link project to ensure the safe delivery of this stage of the Eastern Freeway Upgrades. With a focus on sustainable delivery, and utilising the latest in digital construction technology, we will continue to work closely with the Victorian Government and local communities to minimise disruption and maximise the design and social outcomes for the local people.”

The scope of work for the Eastern Freeway Upgrades – Tram Road to Springvale Road project includes:

  • Upgrading the freeway with new lanes and upgraded freeway ramps
  • Revitalisation of open space, including tree planting in Koonung Creek Linear Park
  • Installation of new traffic management technology to improve safety and traffic flow
  • Enhancing walking and cycling connectivity, including construction of a new pedestrian overpass at Eram Park.

Works are expected to be completed in 2028.
