CIMIC Group company Leighton Asia has been awarded the Sha Tin Transfer Station Third Follow-On Contract by the Hong Kong SAR Government, to refurbish and upgrade one of the city’s key waste management facilities.

The Sha Tin Transfer Station has been in operation since 1994 and plays an important role in handling municipal solid waste in the New Territories East. The project will modernise the facility and extend its operational life.

The A$272 million project will be delivered in a joint venture with Canvest Environmental Protection Group Company Limited, a subsidiary of Grandblue Environment Co., Ltd., for the Environmental Protection Department of the Government.

The transfer station will remain operational throughout the works, which will be delivered in phases.

ACS Group and HOCHTIEF Chief Executive Officer and CIMIC Group Executive Chairman Juan Santamaría said:

“This award reflects the Group’s capability to safely deliver complex upgrades to critical infrastructure while maintaining operations. We are pleased to support the long-term renewal of Hong Kong’s waste management system and deliver improved environmental and operational outcomes.”

Leighton Asia Managing Director Brad Davey said:

“The Sha Tin Transfer Station is a critical asset in Hong Kong’s waste network. This project builds on our experience delivering upgrades in live operating environments. Through targeted modernisation and the integration of smart technologies, we will enhance safety, efficiency and overall performance.”

The scope, which will be delivered for Leighton Asia by Pekko Engineers, its mechanical and electrical arm, includes operation and maintenance of the facility, refurbishment and upgrading of wastehandling systems and associated plant, and improvements to wastewater treatment, odour control, energy efficiency and site operations, including the integration of smart monitoring and safety systems.
