Confronting the Secret. IVF
The miracle of the birth of Violet Rose, inspired Susanne Gervay to write Guess How I Was Born. It explores diverse families and the many ways children come into the world for young children. It is the first time IVF is addressed for kids.
Thankyou to Woman’s Day for its sensitive article of the journey of IVF, defying kidney disease, brain tumours, stokes and the many barriers to reaching a successful birth.
‘Inclusion is vital to a child’s sense of worth.’ Guess How I Was Born? encourages every child to feel included and know that they belong embracing an IVF baby.
And Tango Makes Three is an international best seller. Two male penguins get a surrogate egg and they have ‘Our Miracle Family’. Now it is time to include LGBTQ but to go further.
Family is about adoption, step parenting, single parent, nuclear families, multi generational and all the variations of creating family. However this is the first time that IVF has been included in a picture book.
IVF is complex. 1 in 8 have infertility and there are so many directions from egg or sperm implantation or both, addressing women with generic and physical challenges, fertilization and more. While 1 in 18 have an IVF baby, the reality is much higher. Countless potential parents undergo IVF, with unsuccessful outcomes. It’s becomes a secret for many adults. The secret is often families from nuclear couples, ethnic parents, those undertaking egg harvesting, surrogacy, sperm donations, and the many aspects of IVF. Adults are afraid of negative comments, criticism, and should they share their journey with their children.
Science and love are the hope and a friend. It is one of the pathways to ‘Our Miracle Family’.
Guess How I Was Born? is delightful, honest and fun, and creates opportunities for children to celebrate their uniqueness!
It culminates with love:-
A baby arrives, and everything changes.
Our world gets bigger, heart grows fuller,
And life becomes more meaningful.
