Dam, that's beautiful: historic Copeton bunkhouse receives facelift and six new pod cabins open for adventure campers

A BUNKHOUSE used in the 1960s and ‘70s as temporary accommodation for workers who built Copeton Dam has been refurbished for family and group bookings, and six new “pod cabins” with stunning views over the dam have also been installed by Reflections.
About 40kms south of Inverell on Kamilaroi Country in the New England region of New South Wales, Reflections Copeton Waters sits on the foreshore of the dam, a major sport and recreation hub for water sport enthusiasts and anglers chasing giant Murray Cod.
Reflections, a Crown Land manager which reinvests profit back into the 40 holiday parks it manages across New South Wales as well as the 45 community reserves it cares for, invested $1.8 million to install the six cabins, each with contemporary furnishings, kitchen and bathroom and outdoor deck facing the dam.
A short distance from the cabins, the Copeton Bunkhouse has also received a makeover. Used by workers during the dam construction (1968 to 1976) and more recently by school camping groups, sporting and business and community groups, and for Aboriginal cultural programs, the Bunkhouse’s seven rooms accommodate up to 46 people.
The Bunkhouse refurbishment program included refreshing the rooms, commercial kitchen and large common areas, installing new flooring, heating and cooling systems, and improving accessibility.
Minister for Tourism Steve Kamper said the investment by Reflections at Copeton Waters “is a big win for the local tourism and business economy and also a boost for NSW tourism as a whole”.
“Our Visitor Economy Strategy 2035 is about giving visitors more choice in where they stay. These new cabins and the refurbished bunkhouse do exactly that – bringing quality, affordable accommodation to a part of the state that deserves more visitors,” Mr Kamper said.
Reflections CEO Nick Baker said Reflections Copeton Waters was a haven for families and the additional accommodation was meeting demand from families and groups for modern and accessible accommodation.
“Our Copeton Water park offers a truly unique stay in breathtaking countryside and the chance to enjoy lots of water sports, and this new accommodation makes it all the more enjoyable for those who are keen to take a break from routine and take the road less travelled,” he said.
