DEAD EAGLES, DYING BUDGETS: FAMILY FIRST SAYS SCRAP THE WIND FARM SUBSIDY RORT

Family First's NSW Legislative Council lead candidate Lyle Shelton says new reporting on wind farms killing wedge-tailed eagles while slugging families with a taxpayer-and-power-bill double tax proves net zero is failing on every front.

Family First National Director and NSW Legislative Council lead candidate Lyle Shelton says new reporting revealing a single NSW wind farm killed 20 wedge-tailed eagles in just 18 months, while wind developers lobby for even more consumer-funded subsidies, is proof the net zero experiment is both an economic and an environmental disaster.

Mr Shelton said reporting in The Australian showed wind developers, unable to make their projects stack up even with federal underwriting, are now chasing extra subsidies through the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap — a scheme billed directly to consumers, not taxpayers.

“NSW families are being hit with a double tax on net zero — once through their taxes and again through their power bills — all to prop up wind projects that can’t survive without endless subsidies,” Mr Shelton said.

“Power prices have more than tripled since the mid-2000s and jumped a further 21 per cent in the past year alone. One in five households is now in energy hardship or on the brink, and the same number have been forced to skip meals just to keep the lights on.

“41 per cent of Australian seniors are rationing heating in winter and cooling in summer, and 340,000 customers are stuck in long-term energy debt averaging $1,367. Meanwhile Australia has lost 39,400 manufacturing jobs in just two years because businesses simply cannot compete on power prices this high.

“And for all the pain being inflicted on families and businesses, we are told to accept dead wedge-tailed eagles, bulldozed koala habitat and cleared native forest as the price of saving the planet. It isn’t saving anything — it’s destroying the environment in the name of protecting it, while Australia’s own emissions are just 1 per cent of the global total.

“Family First will end the Net Zero targets, abolish renewable subsidies, ban subsidised wind and solar on agricultural land, native forest and virgin land, keep every coal-fired power station open, unlock our gas reserves and green-light nuclear power — because Australians deserve energy that is affordable, reliable and doesn’t cost us our farmland, forests and wildlife,” Mr Shelton said.

“Family First is calling on every party contesting the next State election to put families before ideology and affordability before targets. Enough is enough — it’s time to put Australian families and businesses first, not rent-seeking renewables investors.”
