DENTIST EXPLAINS THE 7 ORAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT WE CAN ESSENTIALLY PREVENT

Colgate

As every dollar matters and Aussies do their best to save, one wellbeing aspect can be easily overlooked. As a dentist with over 12 years experience and a representative of the Australian Dental Association, Dr Mikaela Chinotti has seen it all. She breaks down the seven common oral care issues1 that are largely preventable.

Dr Mikaela Chinotti says, “'Taking an active preventative approach to your oral health will make a big difference to keeping your teeth, mouth and gums healthy. Not all oral care products are made equal, and it is important to understand the differences so you can choose the right regime for you. Here are some common oral care issues to make sure your oral care products address.’

Plaque

That fuzzy feeling on your teeth is the sticky, colourless film of bacteria otherwise known as plaque. It forms every time you eat and if not removed regularly, it can harden and become difficult to remove. Dental plaque is a common root cause of tooth decay, gum issues and tooth loss.

Tartar

Tartar is hardened plaque which can only be removed by a dental professional. This rock-like substance can lead to gum irritation, inflammation and eventually gum issues and other oral health issues. A thorough twice-daily brushing regime and regular dental visits can prevent tartar from forming.

Cavities

Cavities start when bacteria in your mouth break down sugars and produce acids that erode enamel to form a hole. Regular cleaning and a healthy diet can help prevent cavities from forming. Cavities can lead to fillings and the need for tooth removal if left untreated.

Bacteria

Your mouth is home to both good and bad bacteria, but without proper care, the bad bacteria can easily take over. When harmful bacteria multiply, they produce acids and toxins that irritate gums and weaken enamel. Oral care products that contain antibacterials, from toothpaste to rinses keep bacteria at bay.

Stains

Stains on teeth can be caused by a variety of factors, including  buildup, enamel erosion, certain foods and drinks. Products with whitening ingredients can assist with stain removal.

Enamel Erosion

Once your enamel erodes, it is gone for good. This can result in tooth sensitivity, pain and further tooth wear and weakening. The best ways to prevent enamel loss includes limiting acidic food and drink, using a fluoride toothpaste and regular dental check ups.

Bad Breath

Bacteria buildup in your mouth and throat is usually to blame for bad breath, however chronic bad breath is not easily treated with a mint, and can be a telltale sign of cavities, gum disease or even an infection. Regular brushing, flossing, tongue scraping and staying hydrated are key tips Dr Chinotti recommends to keep bad breath at bay.

“Prioritising oral health doesn’t have to mean expensive treatments,” she says. “It’s about daily prevention habits  – a consistent oral hygiene regimen .. Using products that directly target these oral health issues is the best way to arm yourself with the best protection. For instance, Colgate’s new Total Active Prevention  range is formulated to fight these seven common oral care issues”.
