Dial-A-Dump fined $30,000 for licence breach at Eastern Creek facility

NSW Environment Protection Authority

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has fined Dial-A-Dump (EC) Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Bingo Industries Limited, $30,000 for a licence breach related to dust management.

Following community complaints, EPA officers conducted an inspection of the Bingo Eastern Creek recycling facility on 11 March and observed intermittent dust emissions from a conveyor belt system at the rear of one of the processing buildings and accumulated dust, debris and litter on some machinery.

NSW EPA Director of Operations Jacinta Hanemann said the EPA responded quickly by issuing a clean-up notice requiring the licensee to take action to deal with the issue.

“Dust is a serious issue for the surrounding community, and I thank those residents who reported their concerns to us,” Ms Hanemann said.

“The clean-up notice we issued sets out a series of short, medium and long term actions Dial-A-Dump must take to stop these dust issues from reoccurring.

“This includes cleaning up the accumulated dust, debris and litter and coming up with a long-term engineering solution to minimise dust coming from the conveyor belt system at the rear of this building.

“The facility has also been fined $30,000 for failing to properly maintain and operate equipment, which led to the dust issues.

“Although dust from this part of the site is highly unlikely to be impacting nearby homes, we will continue to inspect this facility and monitor compliance with the licence.

“We are working with Blacktown City Council in relation to other potential dust sources across the Eastern Creek industrial precinct to mitigate impacts on the community.”

Pollution reports, including dust concerns, can be made to the EPA’s Environment Line via [email protected].

To help the EPA investigate these concerns, we remind the community to include the location, time and weather conditions when the pollution was observed.
