Case study

Pensioner Ruth Nielsen's Central West home was damaged in the November 2022 floods and her insurance claim was rejected because she didn’t have flood cover. Due to a breast cancer diagnosis, she didn’t have the energy to challenge the denial. However, with the help of a DRLS lawyer, she was able to prove some of the damage came from stormwater and received around tens of thousands of dollars in benefits. She has been living in a temporary accommodation pod for the past three years and hopes to rebuild her home soon.
