Vanbery Cottage – From Paddock to Pew
Nestled on Mt Alford within a sprawling 43-acre cattle property, Vanbery Cottage is the quintessential romantic escape. It calls home Dulhunty, a 43-acre cattle and rosella farm just outside Boonah, in truly beautiful country. The cottage (which becomes home to travellers from all around the country) is the old Tarome School, and now, thanks to an unexpected Facebook Marketplace tip, it’s been reunited with its sister building — the old Milford (Tarome) Church. Vanbery Cottage Guests can now stay in a beautifully restored local chapel thanks to jam. Yes, jam. Perched high on a hill with sweeping Scenic Rim views, Vanbery Chapel is the newest stay on the charming Vanbery Cottage Host Farm — and its story is as rich and sweet as the homemade jam that funded it. This isn’t just a chapel. It’s a reunion 30 years in the making, and the result of incredible commitment from Helen & Terry Roebig and their daughter Jess Bickerstaff, who run the country stay.
The church hadn’t been a church since 1968, when a storm ripped the roof off and it became a hay shed, weathering away in a paddock. But when Helen and Jess — the mother-daughter team behind Vanbery Cottage and Vanbery Jam Co. — discovered it for sale, a dream was born. What followed was four years of grit, grace, red tape, rain, pandemic delays and a glorious midnight dash through mud and hills. A beam from the old Tabulam Bridge that once spanned the Clarence River now adds support to the walls of the Chapel. Local builders, tradies, Family have poured love into every board. And now, with heart and heritage restored, the Vanbery Chapel has found its forever home.
Proudly Powered by Rosellas!!
Vanbery Jam Co. — the delicious side hustle that helped fund the chapel restoration — turns Helen and Jess’s homegrown rosellas into a lush, flavour-packed artisan range, including:
- Rosella Jam – the hero product, vibrant and tart-sweet
- Rosella Syrup – perfect for a mocktail or cheeky cocktail
- Rosella Tea – dried petals for a ruby-hued, antioxidant- vitamin C rich brew
- Rosella Paste – the perfect accompaniment to cheese
- Rosella Topping – for desserts and ice cream
- Rosella Flowers – perfect in a glass of bubbles or edible decoration!
