EAA's centralise appeal for Myanmar reaches $2.5M

The Australian public has thrown its support behind Emergency Action Alliance’s centralised Myanmar Earthquake Appeal, raising over $2.5M collectively across the EAA members.

Emergency Action Alliance is running the major appeal in collaboration with the following Australian charity partners: ActionAid Australia, ADRA, Anglican Overseas Aid, Australia for UNHCR, Australian Lutheran World Service, Baptist World Aid Australia, CARE Australia, Caritas Australia, CBM Australia, ChildFund Australia, Oxfam Australia, Plan International Australia, Save the Children Australia, and Tearfund Australia.

The appeal total includes $500,000 from the Australian government.                        

The funds will provide urgent relief for people affected by the catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday 28 March, killing over 3,600 people, injuring 4,850 people, with hundreds still missing.

The Executive Director of Emergency Action Alliance, Kerren Morris says the money raised so far shows the generosity of Australians.

“We know that when international disasters strike, Australians dig deep to help. We are so grateful for their kindness and generosity.

“The stories we’re hearing from aid workers is that this was a ‘monster’ earthquake. Children have lost their families, thousands of people are dead or injured. So many homes, hospitals and infrastructure have been destroyed. Schools and roads have been badly damaged and people are sleeping in the streets.”

EAA charity partner, Plan International’s Global Humanitarian Director, Dr Unni Krishnan says the situation is desperate.

“This earthquake has left survivors in urgent need of life-saving support. With rain adding to the misery of children and families sleeping in the open, immediate action is needed to provide clean water, sanitation, safe spaces for children, and emotional care for the most vulnerable. Aid is getting through. But more needs to be done and we can’t do this without your support.”
