Early Access to New Robotic Shoulder Surgery Technology in Australia

Buderim Private Hospital has become one of the first locations in Australia to offer reverse total shoulder replacement surgery using the Stryker MAKO robotic platform, following four procedures performed on 6 August by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Joe Coory of Sunshine Coast Orthopaedic Group.

Dr Coory is part of a small group of surgeons across Australia granted early access to the new shoulder application, which has recently been introduced after years of use in hip and knee procedures. Only a handful of sites in the United States have used this technology prior to the Australian group of surgeons.

“It’s great to be able to introduce this technology to our patients and community,” Dr Coory said. “The platform allows for detailed pre-operative planning and provides intraoperative guidance to assist in accurate implant placement. It also reconfirms that Australia is a leader in both health development and technological advancement.”

The MAKO SmartRobotics™ platform uses 3D CT-based planning and haptic feedback to support surgeons during key stages of surgery. Dr Coory said the addition of MAKO to shoulder procedures reflects a broader trend in orthopaedics toward personalised, technology-enabled surgery. While the application for shoulder replacements is in the early stages in Australia, Buderim Private Hospital will now have the platform permanently in place for eligible procedures.
