Artists from across Australia are invited to submit their work for the 19th edition of the 9 by 5 exhibition, with entries now open for the popular exhibition presented by Greater Dandenong City Council.

Returning to the Drum Theatre from 13 February to 7 May 2027, the annual exhibition challenges artists to create original works measuring exactly 9 x 5 inches (22.9cm x 12.7cm), inspired by Melbourne's landmark 1889 9 by 5 Impression Exhibition.

Entries close at 5pm on Sunday 20 December 2026, or earlier if exhibition capacity is reached.

First presented in 1996, Greater Dandenong's adaptation of the historic exhibition has become a popular showcase, attracting artists from across Australia and highlighting the creativity inspired by its distinctive 9 x 5 format.

Mayor Cr Sophie Tan said the exhibition continues to provide an accessible and exciting opportunity for artists at every stage of their creative journey.

"The 9 by 5 exhibition is a unique opportunity for artists from across Australia to exhibit their work as part of a nationally recognised exhibition while connecting with audiences here in Greater Dandenong," Mayor Cr Sophie Tan said.

"One of the exhibition's strengths is that it welcomes everyone, from first-time exhibitors to established artists, demonstrating that creativity and innovation can come in the smallest of formats."  ‌

Artists can enter up to two artworks for a $15 entry fee, with entries open to a wide range of wall-mounted mediums.

More than $4,000 in prizes will be awarded, including the Best in Show Prize, which includes a $1,000 cash award and the opportunity for the winning artwork to be displayed on Dandenong's Paste-Up Wall for six months.

Additional awards include:

  • Community Connections Prize ($500 cash), sponsored by Dingley Village Community Bank, plus two Dandenong Market Street Food Tour gift vouchers (total value $100)

  • Highly Commended Prize ($750), courtesy of Greater Dandenong City Council

  • Packing Room Prize ($250), courtesy of Greater Dandenong City Council

  • People's Choice Award ($500), sponsored by Holiday Inn Dandenong
