Environmental milestone clears path for approvals for NH3's clean ammonia project in Maitland WA

22 July 2026 - Perth, WA | NH3 Clean Energy (ASX: NH3) has completed the environmental survey program for its proposed WAH₂ Project, removing a key approvals hurdle as the company advances the low-emissions ammonia development toward a final investment decision.

The completion of the survey work provides the baseline environmental information needed to support State and Commonwealth environmental approval referrals, marking an important step in progressing one of Australia's emerging clean ammonia projects.

The surveys found no threatened flora or Threatened Ecological Communities within the WAH₂ plant site or water supply pipeline areas. They also concluded that the project footprint is dominated by common Pilbara habitats with strong regional representation, while identifying no critical cultural heritage constraints within key areas of the proposed development envelope.

For NH3, the results provide supporting information for environmental referral submissions while reinforcing the company's strategy of locating the project within the pre-designated Maitland Strategic Industrial Area in Western Australia.

“The Company has consistently focused on derisking all elements of the project and the selection of the pre-designated development site in the Maitland SIA was part of that strategy. Nevertheless, having completed the environmental surveys on not only the plant site but also the logistics routes for imputs and outputs without any environmental issues being identified is a major milestone for any Australian project. This is one of the workstreams to FID along with engineering, commercial and financing which are progressing at pace.”

The survey program covered flora, vegetation and fauna assessments across the proposed plant site, water pipeline corridor and the broader Maitland-to-Burrup infrastructure corridor. While the broader regional studies identified some priority flora, ecological communities and a migratory bird species, the company said the overall environmental values are consistent with the wider Pilbara landscape and can be managed through established environmental planning measures.

The completed surveys will underpin preparation of the environmental approval referrals and ongoing assessment of the WAH₂ Project. Detailed cultural heritage surveys are planned as the project design and environmental approval process continues. According to the project schedule released with the announcement, WAH₂ is currently in the FEED stage, with engineering studies, commercial agreements and financing work progressing toward a planned final investment decision by the end of 2026.
