EXPERT ALERT: Falls are rising, let's talk about staying safe

Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA)

Falls land more than 400 older Aussies in hospital each day – that’s one every 2.5 minutes – and 17 people lose their lives. This is a significant health issue, costing our health system more than $3 billion a year, but it’s also preventable.

April is Falls Month, encouraging us to talk about risk, improving balance and other prevention strategies.

Researchers from NeuRA’s Falls, Balance and Injury Research Centre (FBIRC) are world leaders in understanding human balance, fall risk factors and strategies for preventing falls in older people.

Experts include:

  • Centre Director, Professor Stephen Lord,
  • Clinical Director, Professor Jacqueline Close
  • Director, Innovation and Translation, Professor Kim Delbaere

They are available to talk about falls prevention, including:

  • Tips for older people on how to reduce their risk of falls
  • Tips for health care professionals on how to help their clients
  • Opportunities for using digital health as part of falls prevention
  • Hip fracture care
