Expert available for comment: Australia's First Treaty Agreement Signed in Victoria

Australia's first treaty with Aboriginal people has been signed into law, in a move labelled "historic" by the United Nations human rights chief. It follows nearly 10 years of consultation and negotiation between the Victorian government and Indigenous leaders.

Dr Harry Hobbs, Associate Professor at UNSW Law & Justice and leading expert on Indigenous rights and treaty processes, is available for interviews.

“This agreement marks a significant step in recognising First Nations' rights to self-determination and reshaping relationships between Indigenous communities and the state,” Associate Professor Hobbs said.

“It’s a moment that will influence treaty discussions across the country."
