FROM MILK CHOCOLATE TO HOT CROSS BUNS: NEW DATA REVEALS AUSTRALIA'S EASTER CRAVINGS

Sydney, Australia, 1 April, 2026 – More than 6 in 10 (61%) Australians surveyed are planning to eat chocolate or Easter treats this Easter long weekend, according to new research from global nutrition and food tracking app, MyFitnessPal.

A recent poll of over a thousand Australians revealed that when it comes to the most popular type of chocolate or seasonal treats Aussies will be enjoying over Easter, milk chocolate is the clear favourite, followed by dark chocolate, hot cross buns and white chocolate. 

 

Meanwhile, MyFitnessPal's logged food data reveals that Aussie’s taste of hot cross buns is also varied. While plain hot cross buns account for 67% of all hot cross buns logged in the app during Easter, Australians are open to other, different flavours of the sweet bun - fruit (14%), chocolate (13%) and apple & cinnamon (6%) were also popular options.

Nutritionist and MyFitnessPal ambassador, Michaela Sparrow, said, “Celebrations like Easter are an important part of Australia’s food culture, and enjoying these foods in moderation can absolutely be part of a healthy, balanced diet - especially when there’s no guilt attached.”

“Milk or dark chocolate preferences might divide the nation but from a nutritional perspective, it's really interesting to see where these preferences stacked. While darker chocolate does offer some antioxidants, most Easter favourites are higher in sugar and saturated fat, so it’s all about balance - enjoying these foods while still prioritising nutrient-dense options throughout the day.”

“The variety in hot cross bun choices also highlights how Australians are embracing different flavours. While plain buns remain the most popular, fruit varieties can offer a small boost in fibre, whereas chocolate-filled options tend to be more energy-dense. Being mindful of these differences can help people make choices that suit their health goals, while still enjoying the festive spirit,” added Michaela.

While Aussies will enjoy their Easter treats over the extended long weekend, 5–8pm is the most popular time for Australians to log their Easter treats, accounting for nearly one quarter of all Easter food logs on the app last year.

Michaela encourages Aussies to enjoy the Easter break with balance in mind, highlighting that maintaining awareness of what you eat, supported by tracking your nutrition, can empower individuals with the information they need to make mindful, stress-free choices.

About the research
The survey was conducted by an independent third party, with a nationally representative sample size of 1,011 Australians. The survey was conducted between 10th - 16th March 2026. The respondents were sourced, using an accredited online research access panel. Data was weighted for representation against the ABS Census.
