Fuel Excise Cut: "Fuel relief ends for families. Coal companies keep theirs. Families are rightly asking how that's fair."

MEDIA STATEMENT - Parents for Climate

Families pay full price again while coal companies keep taxpayer-funded fuel discounts

Fuel relief ends for families. Coal companies keep theirs.

Parents for Climate CEO Nic Seton said:

"Fuel relief ends for families. Coal companies keep theirs. Families are rightly asking how that's fair."

"Every parent knows what it's like when money is tight. You make careful choices about where every dollar goes. Governments should do the same. When public money is limited, families expect it to help people who need it most, not make it cheaper for profitable coal companies to burn more diesel."

"Earlier this year, independent analysis found coal companies could receive another $6.2 billion in taxpayer-funded fuel tax credits if just half of the proposed coal mine developments currently before governments are approved. Australians are rightly asking why family fuel relief has an expiry date, but taxpayer support for profitable coal companies doesn't."

"Australians are already paying twice. We pay full price at the bowser today, and then pay again when climate change pushes up insurance premiums, grocery bills and the cost of recovering from floods, fires and extreme weather. We shouldn't be paying to make the problem worse."

"No family sits around the kitchen table and decides to spend more money making their biggest problem worse. Public money should help lower household costs, strengthen Australia's future and build a safer climate, not make it cheaper to burn more diesel and expand more coal."

"The rebate has ended at the bowser. It's time it ended for coal companies too."
