Key Facts:
  • Gold Coast restructuring expert Glenn O'Kearney of GT Advisory & Consulting is warning struggling small businesses in retail, hospitality, and construction not to rely on Christmas trading to resolve legacy debts, cautioning that a sharp drop in trade by February 2027 could leave operators with no viable turnaround options.
  • Cost-of-living pressures, interest rate uncertainty, soaring commercial rents, and market oversaturation are squeezing margins, with Gold Coast hospitality venues particularly affected by subdued mid-week foot traffic and an influx of new competitors into already saturated dining precincts.
  • Rather than adopting a wait-and-see approach, GT Advisory is urging viable but heavily indebted businesses to immediately explore the federal Small Business Restructuring (SBR) process, which allows directors to retain control whilst working with a restructuring practitioner to negotiate a compromise proposal with creditors, including the Australian Taxation Office.
  • Initiating an SBR before the peak Christmas trading period offers a strategic advantage, enabling businesses to fund their restructuring plan during their strongest cash-generating window and enter the new year on a clean, sustainable footing.
  • Business owners and their professional advisers are encouraged to seek independent restructuring advice before December 2026 to keep all turnaround options available, and can contact GT Advisory & Consulting via gtadvisory.com.au.

HEADLINE: Gold Coast insolvency expert warns struggling small businesses not to rely on a Christmas miracle and to prepare to restructure ahead of February 2027 squeeze

Gold Coast, Queensland - Small business owners in retail, hospitality, and construction are urged not to rely solely on holiday consumer spending for survival, with a Gold Coast restructuring expert warning that failing to address legacy debts now could trigger a severe insolvency spike in early 2027.

With persistent cost-of-living pressures, interest rate uncertainty, and soaring commercial rents, many businesses are seeing margins tighten.

This warning comes as distressed operators increasingly see the impending Christmas period as a final chance to trade their way out of trouble, a strategy experts caution is risky.

Glenn O’Kearney, Registered Liquidator and Principal of Gold Coast-based GT Advisory & Consulting, warns that entering the new year carrying unaddressed debt into an expected economic lull could prove fatal for struggling operators.

“There is a tendency for distressed business owners to rely on the Christmas rush as a magic fix, hoping holiday cash flow will carry them through,” said Mr O’Kearney.

“However, if discretionary spending is softer than anticipated, or if trade drops sharply by February, operators will find themselves completely out of runway, left without the cash flow needed to even fund a formal turnaround.”

The hospitality and retail sectors are already under acute strain, as seen in competitive lifestyle precincts like the Gold Coast, where rapid venue turnover and mounting overheads are eroding viability.

Mr O’Kearney noted that, despite major restaurant precincts across the city reporting packed Friday and Saturday nights, mid-week foot traffic remains subdued.

Compounding the challenge is an influx of new food and beverage venues into already saturated suburban dining precincts, driving severe market cannibalisation.

High base rents, rising supplier costs, and compressed consumer discretionary budgets have left many operators unable to absorb sustained mid-week losses.

Rather than adopting a “wait-and-see” approach until trade slows in February 2027, GT Advisory advises viable but heavily indebted businesses to explore the federal Small Business Restructuring (SBR) process immediately.

Introduced to provide an accessible, lower-cost restructuring pathway for companies with liabilities under $1 million, an SBR allows directors to remain in control while working with a restructuring practitioner to develop a compromise proposal for creditors, including the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Eligibility criteria apply, including paying employee entitlements and keeping tax lodgements up to date.

Mr O’Kearney stressed that initiating an SBR ahead of peak trade offers a critical strategic advantage.

“Undertaking an SBR before peak season enables an operator to fund their restructuring plan out of their strongest cash-generating window,” Mr O’Kearney said.

“Cleaning up legacy debts, tax arrears, and supplier liabilities now puts the business on a clean, sustainable footing. If conditions soften sharply early next year, you are in a defensible position to weather the storm rather than being forced straight into liquidation.”

Business owners and their professional advisers experiencing financial stress are encouraged to seek independent restructuring advice before December to keep all turnaround options on the table.
