GPs help protect public with free flu vaccines at Brisbane Ekka

RACGP Queensland specialist GPs are partnering with Queensland Health at the Ekka Flu Vaccination Clinic this week to help increase influenza vaccination uptake during one of Queensland's largest community events. 

The Queensland Health Ekka Flu Vaccination Clinic will operate daily from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm, providing Queenslanders with convenient access to free influenza vaccinations. 

RACGP Queensland Chair and Acting RACGP Vice President Dr Cath Hester said the clinic demonstrates the important contribution of general practice in protecting the health of Queensland communities. 

"The Ekka Flu Vaccination Clinic provides a valuable opportunity to increase influenza vaccination uptake and promote the very important role of specialist GPs in preventive healthcare," she said. 

"This flu season, Queensland GPs have delivered more than 1.5 million influenza vaccinations, accounting for 57% of all flu vaccinations administered across the state. 

"Receiving a flu vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious illness from influenza. 

"Every vaccination delivered at the Ekka will contribute to a healthier and more resilient Queensland community." 

The pop-up clinic is helping make it easier for Queenslanders and their families to protect themselves against seasonal influenza by bringing vaccination services directly to one of the state's most iconic community events. 

RACGP members and staff are supporting the clinic across multiple days of the Ekka, including Tuesday 11, Wednesday 12 and Saturday 15 August, working alongside Queensland Health personnel and other healthcare partners. 

The initiative highlights the vital role specialist GPs play in preventive healthcare and community wellbeing, while strengthening collaboration between RACGP Queensland and Queensland Health to deliver practical public health outcomes. 

As the Ekka celebrates its 150th year, the initiative also provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of annual influenza vaccination and preventive healthcare.
