GREYHOUND INDUSTRY SUPPORTS FLANNO FOR A FARMER THIS FRIDAY

Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW), its clubs and participants will once again on Friday proudly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Australia’s farming community, raising funds and awareness by supporting the annual ‘Flanno for a Farmer’ campaign.

GRNSW joined the campaign in 2025 with greyhound handlers showing their support by ditching the traditional race bibs and instead wearing flannelette shirts to box their greyhounds.

The initiative is a vital one highlighting the plight of many of Australia’s 200,000 farmers who do it tough through drought, floods, fires, and economic hardship.

“This is such a worthy awareness campaign having learned last year when we first supported the Flanno for a Farmer campaign that one farmer commits suicide every 10 days, that the suicide rate of farmers was almost 59 per cent higher than non-farmers and that NSW has the highest farmer suicide rate,” GRNSW Acting Chief Executive Officer Brian Charman said.

“We can’t ignore this. Nobody should. We have to help raise awareness as best we can and also help raise funds, and we will do that again on August 14 with the Flanno for a Farmer campaign.

“For one day only across all four NSW greyhound race meetings at Goulburn, Grafton, Richmond and Ladbrokes Gardens in Newcastle, $200 from every race will be donated to the cause.

“If an odd-numbered box wins a race, the local racing club will donate $200, and if an even-numbered box wins, GRNSW will donate the $200 to Flanno for a Farmer.

“The initiative last year saw $10,000 raised by the NSW industry on the day, and that figure will be matched again in 2026, with the funds going to Farm Angels, who provide care packs, financial aid, food hampers and mental health support to farmers across Australia.

“I want to of course thank all of our clubs who did not hesitate in being involved,” Mr Charman said.

“But this is about more than just the money, it’s the awareness of the plight and hopefully we will be able to help shine a light on it on Friday.

“Our farmers do so much for this country, and quite often they endure some unimaginable conditions. They shouldn’t have to go through it alone, and we want to let our farmers know that the greyhound community supports them and I urge everyone to get behind this cause.”
