Growing Communities Need More Than Roads. They Need Swimming Lanes.

South West Sydney is one of Australia's fastest-growing regions, with its population projected to rise from around 476,000 residents in 2021 to approximately 720,000 by 2046. As thousands of new families move into the region, planners and communities are recognising that thriving neighbourhoods need more than homes, roads and schools. They also need places that support health, learning and community connection.
Aquatic facilities are among the community assets that help meet those needs. They provide children with essential life skills, encourage lifelong physical activity, bring families together and create pathways for everyone - from babies experiencing the water for the first time to adults learning to swim and young athletes pursuing competitive swimming.
It is this long-term view that underpins Aquabliss Willowdale, which will officially open on 18 July as part of a $30 million community precinct in Denham Court. Designed to serve South West Sydney for decades to come, the facility has been purpose-built to support every stage of a swimmer's journey rather than focusing solely on learn-to-swim lessons.
"Our vision was never simply to build another swim school," said Nitin Singhi, Managing Director of Aquabliss.
"We wanted to create a place that grows with the community. A child might begin here as a baby becoming comfortable in the water, continue through childhood to build confidence and strong technique, continue into squad training, and one day bring their own children back to start the journey again.
"When communities invest in places that encourage healthy lifestyles and lifelong learning, the benefits extend well beyond today's families. They become part of the fabric of the community."
The centre's programs reflect that philosophy by supporting babies, preschoolers, school-aged children, adults and squad swimmers through progressive swimming education that focuses on building confidence, sound technique and water safety. Aquabliss's curriculum has been developed to help children become capable, efficient swimmers, recognising that better technique allows swimmers to travel further using less energy—a key factor in remaining calm and safer in the water.
Alicia Stewart, Aquabliss Willowdale Program Coordinator said communities benefit when facilities are designed to support progression rather than a single stage of learning.
"Every confident swimmer starts somewhere," she said. "A baby's first splash in a lesson, a child mastering their first independent strokes, an adult learning skills they never had the opportunity to develop, or a young swimmer training towards competition.
"Modern aquatic facilities should make that journey possible. When swimmers can continue developing in the same community environment as their confidence and ability grow, they're far more likely to stay active and enjoy swimming throughout their lives."
The Willowdale facility includes an 18-metre learn-to-swim pool and a 25-metre, six-lane pool that can be configured for different class sizes, abilities and training requirements. The 25m pool has been designed to support diving and competitive pathways while continuing to meet the needs of recreational swimmers and community programs.
Beyond structured lessons, facilities such as these become gathering places where families spend time together, children develop confidence, adults improve their fitness, and local sporting talent has the opportunity to grow close to home.
Aquabliss Willowdale will officially open on Friday, 18 July, at 10 am at 145 Jamboree Avenue, Denham Court, with community activities, facility tours and opportunities for residents to explore the centre and learn more about its swimming and aquatic education programs.
