HEADLINE: GT Advisory & Consulting Celebrates 10 Years as one of South East Queensland’s Leading Specialist Insolvency Practices

Gold Coast, Queensland - GT Advisory & Consulting, a leading Gold Coast-based insolvency and restructuring practice, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month.

Founded in May 2016 by Principal Glenn O’Kearney, the firm marks a decade of guiding South East Queensland business owners, directors, and creditors through complex economic cycles.

To mark the milestone, GT Advisory has released its FY2026 insolvency activity overview, including expert insights for directors navigating the year ahead, drawing on ten years of specialised local experience.

According to Glenn O’Kearney, this anniversary is significant because of the economic landscape's transformation over the past decade.

"When we launched GT Advisory in 2016, the goal was simple: to bring high-level corporate restructuring expertise out of the capital cities and deliver a boutique, highly responsive, local service right here on the Gold Coast," said Mr O’Kearney.

"Reflecting on the past decade, from the post-COVID landscape to today’s sustained cost-of-capital pressures, our focus has always been on preserving value and keeping options open for business owners. Celebrating 10 years in business is a testament to the trust our local business, legal, and accounting communities have placed in us."

Over its ten-year history, GT Advisory has supported hundreds of South East Queensland businesses through formal insolvency procedures, including voluntary administrations, deeds of company arrangement, and liquidations.

Reflecting on the 2025–2026 financial year, ASIC recorded 12,819 corporate insolvency appointments nationally for the year to 31 May 2026 (compared to 13,413 during the same period in FY2025).

"What made FY2026 particularly complex for distressed businesses in South East Queensland was a perfect storm of compounding economic pressures," said Mr O'Kearney. "At a local level, businesses grappled with severe margin compression and low business confidence, overlaid with macro factors like supply chain volatility and elevated interest rates."

Key sector pressures observed by the practice in FY2026 include:

  • Construction: Led total national appointment counts as fixed-price contracts signed prior to rate hikes met materials cost inflation and subcontractor failures.

  • Hospitality: Sustained ongoing pressure from higher input costs and reduced discretionary spending as households managed elevated mortgage repayments.

  • Retail: Absorbed tight margins driven by wage growth and import costs.

Looking to the Next Decade: Advice for Directors in FY2027

As GT Advisory enters its second decade, Mr O'Kearney emphasises that early intervention remains the single most critical factor determining whether a business can successfully restructure or face forced liquidation.

“With the Reserve Bank keeping the cash rate at 4.35 per cent and regulatory changes like Payday Super mandates, non-deductible General Interest Charges (GIC), and active ATO enforcement taking effect, businesses are entering FY2027 under real cash flow pressure,” Mr O’Kearney said.

“For directors, the core message after over two decades of doing this work remains unchanged: act early. Seeking advice from a registered practitioner at the first sign of distress isn't the end of a business - it’s often what creates the room needed to negotiate, restructure via voluntary administration, protect value, and safeguard personal positions where director guarantees are involved.”
