How is Book Week an Every Day Week?
The children’s literature community is packed with volunteers who dedicate their passion to literacy and kids. School librarians, teachers, parents, authors, illustrators who dedicate their lives to their professions, give even more. They promote reading in places you cannot imagine.
Clubs donate their venues to kids. The Dee Why RSL Club was buzzing with kids and teacher librarians. Clubs across cities and towns from Wentworthville to Lightning Ridge donate their spaces to kids’ reading. The Children’s Book Council in every state invites their creators to give talks and workshops to schools who may not have an author and illustrator visit. Susanne Gervay OAM and Carla Hoffenburg recently celebrated reading at La Perouse Public School. The La Perouse teacher wrote: We really appreciate the time you took to visit our school - the children and staff had a wonderful time.
Watch out for Carla Hoffenburg’s new picture ‘Harries’. Yes, written by Harry the Bondi Surf Lifesaver with dyslexia, illustrated by Carla Hoffenberg. And Susanne Gervay’s ‘Guess How I Was Born’ because ALL families are Our Families.
Books in Homes the Charitable Foundation for Books in Homes Australia provide books-of-choice to families and children living in remote and low socio economic circumstances all year round. It ensures crucial early literacy engagement and the development of reading skills needed for lifelong success. Since 2001, Books in Homes Australia has successfully delivered nearly 2.5 million quality books of choice to over 570 low socio-economic schools and preschools, and more than 140 supported community centres in New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania. The volunteer selection committee includes Jules Faber of Weirdo fame, Susanne Gervay author of the anti bullying I Am Jack series, Nat Amoore author of Secrets of the Schoolyard Millionaire.
Book Week is a forever week, all year round with the Indigenous Literary Foundation, the Society of Women Writers who celebrate their 100th year in 2025, Australia Reads, Raising Literacy Australia, Australian Rotary Foundation, Reading Friends Australia, Story Dogs, HandsUp4Kids, and many others. Discover how you want to become involved.
