Family First National Director and NSW Legislative Council candidate Lyle Shelton has urged NSW parliamentarians to support an upcoming bill by John Ruddick to ban sex-selection abortion, warning Australia must not tolerate the killing of unborn children simply because they are girls.

Mr Shelton’s comments come after outrage over remarks by controversial US rapper Daniel Hernandez, known as his stage name "Tekashi 6ix9ine, during a livestreamed gender reveal party where he said: “If it’s not a boy, then it’s abortion.”

“This is a vile and shocking statement, but it exposes an ugly reality that abortion is increasingly being used as a tool of gender discrimination,” Mr Shelton said.

“No civilised society should allow unborn baby girls to be killed simply because someone wanted a boy or vice-versa.

“Sadly, Australia’s extreme abortion laws also make sex-selection abortion possible right up to birth.”

Mr Shelton pointed to new research from Edith Cowan University which found evidence of male-biased birth imbalances in some Australian communities, consistent with sex-selective abortion practices.

The ECU study found that among some migrant populations, birth ratios for third-born children after two daughters were significantly skewed towards boys, raising concerns that prenatal sex determination followed by abortion may be occurring in Australia.

“This research demolishes the claim that sex-selection abortion is not happening here,” Mr Shelton said.

“Parliamentarians cannot pretend this is merely a problem overseas.

“When the law permits abortion for any reason, right through pregnancy, it inevitably opens the door to aborting children because of their sex.”

Mr Shelton said girls deserved protection before birth just as much as after birth.

“A society that claims to champion women’s rights cannot remain silent when unborn girls are targeted for destruction simply because they are female.”

Mr Shelton urged people to support the upcoming Sydney Rally for Life backing Mr Ruddick’s bill.

“Family First encourages all people of goodwill to attend the Sydney Rally for Life and send a clear message to NSW MPs that gendercide has no place in Australia,” he said.

“This is not about left or right politics. It is about whether we are prepared to say that every child — boy or girl — has equal dignity and equal worth.”
