People walking and riding near Redfern station are now enjoying a safer and more accessible streetscape after the City of Sydney completed improvement works in the area.

The shared zone upgrade gives riders a clear path to connect with the existing Wilson Street cycleway, while supporting increased foot traffic to and from the upgraded Redfern station.

“The western side of Redfern station is a gateway for university students, workers and residents and it’s fantastic we have been able to make getting in and out of the station safely a priority,” Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO said.

“Making one of Sydney’s most popular train stations more accessible helps encourage the use of vital infrastructure like public and active transport, which helps drive down emissions and reduce congestion on our roads.

“We’ve greened the area and made it much more pleasant while making a seamless connection between Wilson Plaza and Little Eveleigh Street.”

As part of the works the City of Sydney has:

  • refreshed around 800m² of street space with new pavers
  • planted 10 trees to increase natural shading
  • planted 320m² of new plants to cool and beautify the area
  • improved lighting around the plaza
  • installed 10 new seats.

The Wilson Plaza improvements are part of the City of Sydney’s commitment to make Sydney a city for walking, riding and better public transport.

The City of Sydney project was supported and co-funded by Transport for NSW as part of its upgrade of Redfern station.
