Law meets life across Victoria during Law Week (18 - 24 May 2026)
Victorians will have access to more than 100 free and some low-cost events during Victorian Law Week (18–24 May 2026), with practical help on everyday issues like renting, work, family, money and buying goods and services.
With events hosted by community organisations, legal services and government agencies across the state, this year’s theme, Where law meets life, focuses on what to do and where to get help when everyday problems involve the law.
Events are designed for people with no legal background and are run by community organisations, legal services and government agencies. They are delivered in person in local community spaces, as well as live online.
Events include:
- Free and low-cost sessions on getting legal help with common issues including housing, work, relationships, purchasing goods and money
- Practical guidance on rights, responsibilities and where to find help
- Opportunities to ask questions, hear from experts and learn how the justice system works.
Victoria Law Foundation Executive Director Lynne Haultain said Victorian Law Week is about making the law feel practical and accessible for people navigating real-life problems.
“Law usually meets life in the everyday. It could be a dodgy purchase, a bond dispute or unpaid wages. Victorian Law Week is about giving people clear, reliable information and a way to find the right help, without the jargon,” Ms Haultain said.
Victorian Law Week event highlights:
- From Community to Jury Box: be part of the process, explore how juries work and see how you would fare when the pressure is on.
- Tour the Neighbourhood Justice Centre: a guided tour of Australia's only community justice centre, exploring the range of services delivered under one roof.
- The Gentle Art of Making a Complaint: understand the role of ombudsmen and how they accept, investigate and resolve complaints.
- Resolving Residential Tenancy Disputes: learn how Victoria’s new approach to resolving residential tenancy disputes works.
- Preventing Future Deaths: Inside the Coronial System: learn how coronial investigations and forensic medicine work together to investigate deaths.
- Separation and Family Law: What You Need to Know: know more about family dispute resolution, available legal support, and the role courts play.
- Protest & Police: Know Your Rights in Victoria: understand your legal rights and how recent protest law changes may affect you.
