Bhaskar Sunkara, the founding editor of Jacobin magazine and President of US progressive journal The Nation, is touring Australia 24 May to 2 June, with major speaking engagements in Sydney, Wollongong, Canberra and Melbourne.

Sunkara is a significant figure in US politics and progressive left thinking, especially among young people. He was Vice Chair of the Democratic Socialists of America, an organisation associated with Senator Bernie Sanders, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the new Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani -- and knows these national political figures personally.

He was an early supporter of Mamdani, endorsing him and campaigning alongside him during the NYC mayoral campaign.  He has first person insights into contemporary US politics, the rise of authoritarianism under Trump, and the groundswell of support - particularly among young people - for progressive alternatives to the status quo.

Sunkara and others he works with represent a strong and effective opposition to Trump and Trumpism. In New York and elsewhere, they have succeeded in winning over Trump voters, often where centrist Democrats have failed, by clearly taking the side of workers and ordinary people against the billionaire elite, while avoiding many of the pitfalls of 'culture wars'.

Bhaskar Sunkara is available for media interview during his time in Australia.

Please call or email Phil Davey 0414 867 188, [email protected] to arrange.
