Media alert: webinar for journalists reporting on men and masculinities
Our Watch
Journalists and media professionals are invited to a free webinar this month on the positive influence media reporting can have on men and masculinities. (Register here)
The webinar, hosted by Australia’s national organisation for the prevention of violence against women, Our Watch, will show how better reporting in the media of men and masculinities can prevent violence against women.
The event on 18 November features a panel including leading journalist and columnist Dr Jenna Price; Dr Innocent Mwatsiya, research fellow with the Reducing Gender-Based Violence Research Group at the Violet Vines Marshman Centre for Rural Health Research in the La Trobe Rural Health School; and Dr Hayley Boxall, Criminologist and research fellow in domestic and family violence at ANU. Dr Stephanie Lusby from Respect Victoria will also provide a snapshot of its 'Willing, capable and confident' report findings.
The webinar will explore moving beyond stereotyped portrayals of men, how best to frame perpetrators when reporting on violence against women, the latest research on engaging men in violence prevention work, and evidence-based messaging to support men to see themselves as part of the solution. It will also give examples of keeping perpetrators in view without excusing their actions or causing additional harm to victim-survivors.
The webinar is designed for journalists, media professionals, and communicators who want to enhance their reporting on the issues and contribute to preventing violence.
It comes ahead of the release of new Our Watch research and resources related to men and masculinities as part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign.
