Veteran and Family Wellbeing Agency Chief Executive announced

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Brendan Cox as the inaugural Chief Executive of the new Veteran and Family Wellbeing Agency.

Brendan was appointed following an extensive, merit-based recruitment process.

After serving for 28 years in the Australian Defence Force, Brendan has years of experience advocating for the veteran community - working across Defence, ex-service organisations and in the private sector.

He served as CEO of Legacy Brisbane for a decade and is a current Director of the Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation, where he supports research into veteran health and mental health.

Brendan himself was medically discharged from the ADF and understands the unique impacts of service and the transition to civilian life.

Brendan is passionate about supporting Australians who serve our country and the families who support them.

As Chief Executive, Brendan will be responsible for leading the charge to create a holistic model of care, where existing silos of support are better connected.

The Veteran and Family Wellbeing Agency will be up and running on 1 July 2026, delivering on recommendation 87 of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.

A key focus of the Agency will be making it easier for veterans and families of veterans to connect to the information, community services and support. It will provide enhanced support for veterans as they transition from military to civilian life.

The Agency will provide a clearer and more coordinated pathway, acting as a central point of access for wellbeing support, while also supporting those with more complex needs. Importantly, the Agency will be integrated with the Albanese Government’s Veterans’ and Families’ Hub Network to provide support and services to families of veterans across the country.

Brendan Cox will commence with the Agency on 27 July.

Department of Veterans’ Affairs Deputy Secretary Alison McLaren will serve as interim Chief Executive from 1 July until Mr Cox officially commences in his new role.
