Mental health support meets the daily commute
10,000 Conversations returns to Central Station for Mental Health Month
With more than one million passenger journeys across the Sydney Trains network every weekday, one of Australia’s busiest daily commutes is providing a significant platform for mental health support this Mental Health Month.
On Wednesday 14 October 2026, volunteers from Wesley Mission, Sydney Trains and Lifeline Sydney and Sutherland will be at Central Station during the morning and afternoon peaks, sharing mental health resources and creating opportunities for conversations about mental health and wellbeing.
Behind the daily rush of commuters are people facing challenges that are not always visible. Wesley Mission CEO, Rev Stu Cameron, says recognising that someone may be struggling and taking the time to connect can be an important first step towards getting help.
“People do not leave life’s pressures behind at the Opal gate. They travel with us. Sometimes a conversation can be the first step towards getting help. You do not need all the answers to make a difference. Sometimes starting the conversation is enough to change someone's life for the better.”
Sydney Trains CEO, Matt Longland, says, “The scale of our network gives us an extraordinary opportunity to reach people from across Sydney and beyond.
“Central is Australia’s busiest transport interchange. 10,000 Conversations brings an important mental health message into the heart of our network.”
NSW Minister for Mental Health, the Hon. Rose Jackson MLC, says mental health is part of all our lives and talking about it should be too.
“‘Our landmark whole of government Suicide Prevention legislation explicitly acknowledged all parts of the NSW Government have a role to play in promoting mental health and suicide prevention. It is great to see Transport for NSW already stepping up with partnerships to do this work”
“If a conversation on a train platform helps someone feel less alone or take that first step towards support, that’s incredibly powerful.”
10,000 Conversations brings this year’s Mental Health Month theme, Together We Thrive, to life through connection and community.
