This year marks the sixth consecutive year Mercedes College has participated in the Ponytail Project. Since the initiative began at the College, hundreds of students have donated their hair and together raised more than $150,000 for the cause, making a meaningful difference to the lives of Australians affected by cancer.

In the lead-up to the event, students have undertaken extensive fundraising efforts, both individually and collectively, including hosting a College bake sale and other community initiatives that have contributed to the remarkable fundraising total.

When asked to give a message to people considering “the chop” Asha, Year 12 Mercedes College student, said “ If you were thinking about rocking the chop or looking for more to do in the community, remember that even a small action can make a real difference. Whether it’s a donation, cutting hair or spreading awareness, it helps support those in need. It’s the perfect opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, and stand with those affected by cancer.”

The Mercedes College Principal, Dr Lucie McCrory, added “Each year, the Ponytail Project reminds us what young people can achieve when they come together with purpose and empathy. These 44 students are showing courage and collectively demonstrating the fundraising impacts of unity and service to others. They are leading with heart, raising awareness and supporting vital research. This initiative reflects the very best of our Mercy values in action and I am immensely proud of the girls”

Demonstrating that this initiative extends beyond the student body, two Mercedes College staff members will also be taking part in the chop, highlighting the collective commitment of the College community to supporting those affected by cancer.

About us:

A Mercy Education Built on Service

In 2026, Mercedes College proudly celebrates 180 years of Mercy Education in Western Australia. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1846 under the leadership of Ursula Frayne, Mercedes College was the first Mercy school established in Australia and remains on the same historic site in the heart of Perth today.

Guided by the Mercy values of compassion, justice, service, integrity, excellence and hope, Mercedes College is committed to developing confident, capable and socially conscious young women who seek to make a positive difference in the world. Through a rich and holistic education encompassing academic, cultural, sporting, spiritual and service opportunities, students are encouraged to grow as leaders who respond to the needs of others with courage and compassion.

Service is at the heart of a Mercedes education. Students actively contribute to their communities through Mercy Service programs, fundraising initiatives and social justice projects, including McGrath Day, Mercy Day, the annual Frog Jog, support for Mercy Works, MercyCare and Caritas Australia, and community donation drives. Through these experiences, students learn that leadership is not simply about achievement but about using their talents to serve others.

Located within Perth's heritage precinct, Mercedes College combines a proud tradition with future-focused learning. Through its unique Learning in the City approach, students engage with the wider community and are empowered to become young women of Mercy who aspire, excel and lead with purpose.
