“OpenAI's choice to publish a statement about responsibility to the mathematical community alongside its latest results is significant. It's an important acknowledgment of the conversations regarding attribution and transparency happening within the discipline.

"It's surprising how quickly the conversation has changed. A year or two ago we were asking whether large language models could contribute in a meaningful way to mathematics research. Today we're asking how to integrate them into our workflows while maintaining the standards and culture that are integral to the mathematical community.

"My own collaboration experiences reflect the spectrum of reactions to AI-assisted mathematics. Some researchers have principled reasons for avoiding AI, while others are investing significant time and money to use it to accelerate discovery in remarkable ways. Both perspectives deserve to be taken seriously.

"The disruption caused by generative AI is prompting mathematicians to ask some surprisingly old-fashioned questions. Is the goal simply to produce new theorems, or is it to develop understanding? Who is accountable for the correctness of mathematics generated by LLMs? Those are conversations that will shape the future of mathematics just as much as the technology itself.”
