New fellowship invites journalists to reshape the future of news

Monash University

Applications are now open for Monash University’s inaugural Constructive Institute Asia Pacific Hub Fellowship to support senior news professionals in reimagining the future of journalism.

The Fellowship invites senior journalists, editors and news leaders from all media platforms to step away from the daily pressures of the news cycle to explore new approaches to reporting that strengthen trust, deepen public understanding and support engaged, informed communities.

There are 14 funded fellowships available for the program which will be held in person in Melbourne in two blocks in April and September.

Director of the Constructive Institute Asia Pacific Hub, Professor Kate Torney, said the fellowship comes at a pivotal moment for the industry.

“As global division deepens and democratic norms are tested, journalism’s role has never been more vital. Journalism is at a crossroads, and this program gives experienced practitioners the time and space to reimagine what comes next. We want to support journalists who want to move beyond news outrage cycles and help shape coverage that informs, empowers and connects communities.”

Co‑designed by the Constructive Institute Asia Pacific Hub and the Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership, the Fellowship offers participants a chance to rethink how journalism can better serve the public in an era marked by misinformation, polarisation and news avoidance.

The Fellowship is open to journalists around Australia, Asia and the Pacific with at least seven years’ experience who demonstrate outstanding leadership, an innovation mindset and a commitment to constructive, solutions‑focused reporting.

Applicants can apply via the Constructive Institute Asia Pacific Hub website by 24 February 2026.

The Constructive Institute Asia Pacific Hub forms part of Monash University’s broader commitment to strengthening access to evidence‑based news and addressing the challenges of misinformation and disinformation.

Based within the School of Media, Film and Journalism, the Constructive Institute Asia Pacific Hub builds on the work of the Constructive Institute in Denmark, generating region-specific data and insights, tailored to the diverse audiences and media landscapes of Australia, Asia and the Pacific.
