New national day championing healthy ageing launches May?6

Independent Living Assessment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Australia’s first National Healthy Ageing Day will be held on 6 May, highlighting how simple, practical healthy ageing approaches can help Australians stay strong, independent, and keep doing what matters as they age.

Australia is ageing rapidly, creating an opportunity to rethink how we support people to live well for longer. Healthy ageing is supported through evidence‑based actions such as staying active, staying socially connected, and using the right tools to maintain independence.

The inaugural theme, Keep doing what matters, encourages people to reflect on what they value most, whether that’s continuing a hobby or maintaining social ties, and how healthy ageing approaches can support those goals.

Andrea Morris, CEO of iLA, said: “Ageing well doesn’t require big changes. It starts with small, achievable actions that support strength, connection and independence. National Healthy Ageing Day is about encouraging people to take those steps."

The National Healthy Ageing Day website provides tailored information and resources for individuals, workplaces, and those people within the health and aged care sector to support participation in the day.

National Healthy Ageing Day invites all Australians to take part and make healthy ageing a shared national priority.

Pat Sparrow, CEO of COTA Australia, said: “National Healthy Ageing Day recognises the importance of supporting people to stay independent and keep doing what they love. COTA Australia is proud to support the inaugural National Healthy Ageing Day and the message behind it: that everyone should have the opportunity to age with strength, independence, and dignity.”
